The Newton Fund aims to promote the economic development and social welfare of either the partner countries or, through working with the partner country, to address the well being of communities. It was launched in 2014 and originally consisted of £75 million each year for 5 years. In the 2015 UK Spending Review, the fund was agreed to extend to 2021 and expand by doubling the investment to £150 million, leading to a £735 million UK investment to 2021, with partner countries providing matched resources within the Fund.

In Thailand, under the Newton Fund, the British Council Thailand is working with our 3 national partners to utilise the common ground of a shared research area to provide opportunities for researchers from the UK and Thailand to form sustainable collaborations that build mutuality and trust over the longer term.
