Research Grant for All Campuses

Besides Research and Development Office at the main campus, the researchers from all 5 campuses can also request for grants from their own campuses:

1. Pattani Campus

(1) General Research

A qualifying research or invention must be a mid- or high-level and by a researcher from Pattanee campus. The grant serves as a subsidiary fund for a research projects that could not submit for the capital grant in time or in urgent need for a grant but has no other source of funding. Up to 200,000 Thai Baths per grant, only 12 grants are provided per year. The research must be scheduled for completion in less than 2 years.

(2) Researcher Development

Researcher from Pattanee campus who has never received any grant can apply for this grant. The grant includes compensation for a senior researcher who provides consultation to the proposing researcher. There are 3 grants per year, each research must be completed within 2 years, and 100,000 Baths per grant including compensation for the senior researcher.

(3) Pattani Campus Dedevelopment Research

A qualifying research must aim to improve Pattanee campus such as organizational research or research to improve teaching and learning experience.

A qualifying research must be completed within 1 year. The campus provides 2 grants per year, up to 100,000 Baths per grant, for the research that involves problematic organizations and is desirable to the campus. Twenty grants, up to 5,000 Baths per grant, are available for research about teaching and learning.

(4) Directed Research

The grant provides support to researchers, whose projected goals are in

line with the national research strategy, Pattanee research strategy, or the university’s strategy, emphasizing local issues and is a integrated research including more than one subject area.

A qualifying research must schedule to be completed within 3 years. There are 
3 grants per year and up to 300,000 baths per grant.

(5) Undergraduate Research and Invention

One hundred grants per year is available for undergraduate students enrolled in research coursework who are interested in special issue project, special education and art thesis. With 100 grants a year, the quota is divided so each faculty has up to 3,000 Baths. A qualifying research must be completed within 6 months.

2. Surat Thani Campus

(1) Undergraduate Project or Research

Providing support for projects or research conducted by undergraduate students of Surattanee campus. The grant comes from 2 different sources: the faculty and the campus. The proposed project or research must be published in international publications or presented at national academic conferences.

(2) Graduate Students’ Theses

Up to 20,000 Baths is granted to a graduate student conducting a thesis. Fifty percent of the grant is paid once the proposal is approved and the other 50 % is paid as soon as the manuscript is published in a publication.

(3) Institutional Research

Up to 1000,000 Baths/grant is provided to a research that is completed within 1 year and benefits the campus development in all areas.

(4) Supporting Grant from Research Fund

A qualifying reseach must be an integrative research, an interdisciplinary research or a single research, whose results would be beneficial and are in accordance with the university strategy, Surattanee Provincial strategy and Surattanee Campus strategy.

Up to 300,000 Baths per grant for integrative or interdisciplanry research. Up to 100,000 Baths per grant for a single project.

3. Phuket Campus

The campus provides funding for researchers from the campus who initiates a research aiming to improve him/herself or his/her organization on campus.

Up to 50,000 Baths is provided per such grant. In addition, any personnel who seeks funding for a graduate study thesis can apply for this grant. Up to 25,000 Baths a grant is provided to support any Masters Degree thesis while up to 50,000 Baths per grant is provided for a Ph.D. thesis.

4. Trang Campus

Trang campus supports researches that create new knowledge; aim to develop teaching, learning and the students as well as to resolve local issues, invention or prototype, and institutional research.

Up to 10,000 Thai Baths/grant is made available for a research that creates new knowledge, a research aiming to develop teaching and learning as well as the students, and invention and prototype. Up to 50,000/grant is rewarded to s research aiming to resolve local issues. Up to 20,000 Baths/ grant for an institutional research.

1. Office of Thailand Research Fund

The Office of Thailand Research Fund has a mission to support creating knowledge, researchers and research system to answer questions and propose alternatives to the society. Therefore, the Office supports researchers in educational institution, public and private sector, and community to conduct research. The grants are as follow:

(1) Academic Research Grant, consists of 2 categories:

a. Creative Basic Research

- Research group (Advanced Research Scholar)

- Outstanding research professor

- Research that produces new knowledge as a basis for development (Advanced Research Scholar)

- Researcher development (Advanced Research Scholar)

- Research by mid-level professor (National Research and Development in collaboration with The Office of Higher Education Commission)

- Research by Young professor (National Research and Development in collaboration with The Office of Higher Education Commission)

- New researchers

b. Strategic Basic Research Project

Providing support to a set of research projects to create basic research 
foundation for national development strategy

- Research projects on herbs, medicines and health supplements

- Research projects to promote sustainable agriculture, post-harvest knowledge and food processing

(2) Research and Development Fund

    emphasizes practical application of research, divided into 5 sections:

- National policy and international relation

- Agriculture

- Public welfare

- Community

- Industry

(3) Local Development Grant

       Provides support to research projects that provide answer to questions from the community with the community taking part in the research process.

(4) The Royal Jubilee Ph. D. Program
       The program’s mission is to strengthen Thailand’s research system and increase potential for competition by increasing number of Ph.D. researchers. The Program has set a goal in phase 1 (1998-2012) to produce 5,000 Ph.D. researchers with 5,000 research projects; in phase 2 (2008-2022) to produce 20,000 Ph.D. researchers with 20,000 research projects.

2. National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA)

NSTDA plays an important role in science and technology development or innovation in Thailand. The types of research that would qualify for grant from NSTDA are as follow:

- Research that aims for commercial or public use

- Research that is valuable in the academic area and develops science and technology of the country

- Research that improves quality, productivity and values of national resources

NSTDA Grants include:

a. NSTDA Chair Professor

      The grant aims to create a “chief professor” who is a leader in research and development in science and technology and connecting them to manufacturing and service sectors. The grant supports a research that will enhance competition in the industrial or service sector or overall development of the country. In 2011, there are categories of the grant:

- Alternative energy and Energy efficiency

- Material science appropriate to Thailand

- Environment

- Health science

b. Research Leader Grant

    The grant has the following purposes:

- to create strong research group that performs with effective teamwork. To continuously develop researchers and connect everyone from the students level to the senior researcher level.

- To create the sense of belonging and linking knowledge to manufacture, service or social sector.

- To inspire research projects that are highly-influential to the economic or social development, emphasize projects that are in line with 4 Cluster technology program of NSTD.

3. National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC)

NECTEC has established a network of public and private educational institutions by way of researchers from these institutions collaborate on a research and provide results to the private sector for further development. NECTEC serves as a coordination unit. This grant is named development research and engineering grant.

4. National Metal and Materials technology Center (MTEC)

MTEC research and development grant is called MTEC Basic Technology Program, which is a NSTD integrative program following 2007-2012 MTEC strategy in 8 industrial clusters of the country. The strategy aims to connect all educational and professional laboratories in Thailand and other countries to develop a national technology roadmap. MTEC is accepting proposal submission of computer technology development projects for engineering and production design (c1-30).

5. National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC)

BIOTEC provides funding to 3 main programs – Genome technology Program, Microbiology Technology Program and Agricultural Biology Technology Program.

6. National Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC)

NANOTEC is a NSTD unit supports researchers to create knowledge or technology, based on Nanotechnology Platform, which could create or develop prototype technology, receive patent or be published in international publications. A qualifying research must fit into 3 technology platforms including 1) Nano Coating Technology 2) Nano Encapsulation Technology and 3) Functional Nanostructure.

7. Energy Policy and Planning Office, Ministry of Energy. (EPPO)

EPPO supports research projects that promotes energy conservation, which is divided into 3 plans, including renewable energy development plan, energy efficiency plan, strategic development plan.

8. Office of Health Fund

The Office of Health Fund supports collaboration among individuals, organizations and communities to achieve wellbeing of Thai people, in all four aspects, including body, mind, intellect, social. The office also aims to support positive health habits among the citizens.

In the budget year of 2012, the Office offers health promotion project grant from October 1, 2011, till June 30, 2012.

Internal fund

Category:

PSU provides 2 types of fund from internal source: national budget and university budget:

1. National Budget

       Qualifying research must comply with the national development strategy or national research strategy. The proposal that is in line with the university’s research strategy, or submitted by the research network (CoE, RC, RU), or related to graduate program or other campuses, a set of projects will receive higher consideration.

       Proposal could be submitted as a single project or as a set. A set of projects must have an estimated time of completion no longer than 3 years and must include 2-6 subprojects, 2 of which must be conducted within the first year the researcher is proposing to receive funding. Each of the subprojects will receive up to 220.000 Thai Baths/year while a single project will receive up to 495,000 Thai Baths/year.

2. University Budget

There are 12 categories of grants that are divided into 2 types: grants for research projects and grants for researchers.

a. Grants for research projects

(1) General Projects and Invention

     A qualifying proposal must be a research project or invention or prototype. The research project is expected to be published in academic publications, to be submitted for patent or to be utilized in other academic areas.

    The grant is divided into 2 levels: up to 400,00 Thai Baths for a research aiming to be published in publications in ISI database or Scopus, or to receive patent; up to  200,000 Thai Baths for a research aiming to be published in other academic publications or to receive patent.

(2) Grant for Researcher Development

     This type of grant is designed to support a first-time researcher, who has never received any type of research grant before. A liaison, or a senior researcher, is assigned to provide consultation. Up to 110,000 Thai Baths, including 100,000 Baths for the operational fund and 10,000 Baths to compensate the liaison.

Note: Applicants can apply for either the general or the researcher development grant, except applicants from Pattanee campus, which already has its own funding for these categories.

(3) Student Project

     The university supports student projects that could potentially be published or submitted for a contest. The project must have already received no less than 50% of funding from its faculty/organization. The university subsidizes no more than 50% of funding or no more than 5,000 Thai Baths per project.

(4) Institutional Research

    This grant supports any of the university personnel who wishes to conduct research that aims to develop the institution. There are two categories, which include topics of interest and general. The topics of interest category receives up to 100,000 Thai Baths while the general category receives up to 50,000 Baths.

(5) Undergraduate Industry/Community Research Projects (PSU-CIRPUS)

     The proposed research project must involve three key sectors – the university, the faculty and the industry/community sectors – to resolve current issues in the industry/community. The university provides 40 grants, 20 for the industry sector and 20 for the community sector, up to 50,000 Thai Baths per grant.

(6) International Cooperation Research

     The grant supports researcher’s effort in collaborating research and exchanging experience with other researchers abroad. The study results must be published; receive patent or other intellectual property licensing; or be utilized in academic, policy, public or commercial sectors. Up to 400,000 Thai Baths/grant provided by 3 sponsors – 50% from the candidate’s faculty/organization, 25% from the candidate’s campus, and 25% from the university.

(7) Beginner Research Scholarship

      In order to inspire new Ph.D. graduates to conduct research, the scholarship provides a research opportunity with a senior researcher, who liaised with the researcher throughout the process. Up to 196,000 Thai Baths is granted, including 7,000 Baths/month to compensate the researcher and 4,000Baths/month to compensate the senior researcher/liaison.

      PSU is composed of 5 campuses, each of which has its own researches. In order to promote collaboration among the researchers across these campuses, the university has come up with 2 types of grant – up to 10,000 Thai Baths/grant to send researchers to participate in conferences to improve their specialties; up to 50,000 Thai Baths to arrange for a senior researcher to assist a researcher in another  campus.

      The grant provides opportunity for PSU researchers to study and exchange knowledge and experience with researchers in other countries. Up to 200,00 Thai Baths/grant for conducting research, up to 80,000 Thai Baths/grant for following up progress of researches conducted by graduate students from PSU. The funding comes from 3 sources – 50% from the candidate’s faculty/organization, 25% from the candidate’s campus, and 25% from the university.

(4) Methajarn Scholarship

      The scholarship supports personnel who has continuously conducted researches and increased academic productivity at the international level. The university thus provides the opportunities for these individuals to attend conferences/seminars; conduct research abroad; provide materials, equipment or software, etc. Up to 200,000 Thai Baths/grant comes from 3 sources – 50% from the candidate’s faculty/organization, 25% from the candidate’s campus, and 25% from the university.

(5) Prachayajarn Scholarship

      Provided to PSU researchers who have shown high potential such as having published more than 10 articles in ISI database. Up to 1,000,000 Thai Baths/year is provided based on the proposing research and commitment to productivity of the research.
